PurposeWhile the COVID-19 outbreak affects all aspects of life in the world, there is also a global impact in the field of education. Within the scope of the measures to control the epidemic, distance education was started shortly after the starting of the spring semester in all primary and secondary schools and universities. In this process, architectural design courses, which are one of the most fundamental courses of architectural education, started to be held in online studios. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the evaluations of architecture students about the online design studio courses carried out during the COVID-19 outbreak.Design/methodology/approachThis research used a qualitative approach to evaluate the ideas of first, second, third and fourth grade students of architectural design studios in the host university. A questionnaire was directed to students in order to see their opinions about the online design studio education.FindingsResults shows that students think the most prominent benefit of online studios appears in the use of digital tools. Another important result is that if they are equipped with the necessary tools and given the chance to realize themselves, students can work efficiently even in the distance education process.Originality/valueThis study is important in terms of learning the expectations of students from the online process and to identify important issues that should be considered for the next semesters. In addition, this study will serve as a basis for comparative evaluation of architectural education during and after the epidemic. In this context, the study will shed light on future academic research.

Purpose The study aims to identify the issues that restrict students to show their real performance in the design due to lacking of self-advocacy skills and suggesting a new concept to overcome these difficulties. Design/methodology/approach The current literature was surveyed to form a comprehensive understanding of the issue. A case study has been taken for three years and two groups of students were taken. Results achieved and discussed. Findings The result of the study showed that those students who undergo an environment equipped with knowledge about self-advocacy can perform better and the success level is relatively higher amongst these students. Originality/value This study contributes to the current literature an original knowledge that has not been previously written about (empowering self-advocacy amongst students of interior architecture). The profession of interior architecture is a relatively new profession and faces challenges in fixing its feet on the ground that is why the subject can add a real value to it to alleviate the challenge.

An Experimental Approach to the Sophomore Architectural Design Studio

Architectural education is widely dominated by design studio courses. Their organization and development constitute an open challenge for educators due to the complexity of the participating factors, i.e., teaching method, design topics, assignments, expected learning outcomes, and experimentation. In particular, the organization might be considered as the factor that characterizes the whole process of the design studio course in different forms. In this research, an experimental approach based on 3 project assignments has been proposed for the sophomore design studio courses, as an alternative to the common practice of single project assignment per semester. The procedure aims on proposing a method that allows the students to maintain the organizational schemes of the freshman courses and increase their competences constantly and progressively. The process has been implemented during the fall semester 2019 and applied in the Architectural Design Studio 1 at Alanya Hamdullah Emin Pasa University, Department of Architecture, program in the English language. At the conclusion of the experiment, a questionnaire for the students has been conducted. The paper presents the organizational model proposed, the results of the questionnaire, observations of the lecturer, and discusses the reliability of the proposed method.
