Rethinking social psychology and intervention design: A model of energy savings and human behavior

Abstract: This theoretical-review article contributes to the discussion on individual energy savings by developing a hypothetical classification of interventions and linking them to sociopsychological factors affecting the transition points of four phases of behavior change (predecision, preaction, action, and postaction). It helps to segment a population into subgroups, clarifies the dynamic process for individuals, and groups examples of interventions to achieve substantial behavioral change. The generic integrative m… Show more

“…Then, 'setting new routines' and finally 'refreezing' to establish the new behaviour to avoid a fall-back to old behavioral patterns is implemented. Finally, interventions strategies applied combine different tailored interventions described above in a systematic policy mix [10][11][12][13][14][15]. The so developed intervention strategies of the ECBA are systematically set up to target the different trigger points, segments and types of behaviours.…”

“…Kuckshinrichs evaluates the social impacts of energy efficient technology transition by means of building refurbishment programs supported by governments (as an intermediary actor) [104]. Beside a macro-scale evaluation of impacts of eco-innovations, transition conceptualization is also applied directly to behavior change progress in order to figure out relevant interventions of individual energy savings [12,105]. In parallel to recent technological advancements, big data and social network innovations are considered to be facilitator for the monitoring of 'behavior transitions' of individuals [106].…”
