Rethinking Protection of Those Displaced by Humanitarian Crises

Abstract: In June 2015, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees announced a landmark event in the history of his organization. UNHCR estimated that there were more refugees and displaced persons than it had counted since its establishment in 1950--almost 60 million who fled conflict and persecution. While certainly large in its own right, the number actually underestimates displacement in today's world. Many millions more are displaced each year and cumulatively from a much broader range of life-threatening humanitarian c… Show more

“…Forced displacement has emerged as one of the most pressing humanitarian and development issues of our day. Not only are there now more displaced individuals around the world than any time since World War II (UNHCR, 2017), but the length of time in displacement for a great many is on the rise (Milner and Loescher, 2011;Crawford et al, 2015;IDMC, 2016;Martin, 2016). “…Steffen et al [81] estimated potential tipping points with 2, 3, and 4°C scenarios, where Mexico will be highly impacted. Martin [82] insisted that humanitarian crises are increasing due to climate events such as hurricanes and floods or slow onsets, basically related to droughts, reducing crop yields, and lack of food and water, which harm the survival conditions of the people.…”

“…Scholars are exploring the particular experiences and vulnerabilities of women, children and LGBTQ+ people in migration processes (Murray, 2014). They analyse how gender intersects with other social categories such as race, ethnicity and class and shapes migrants' experiences, access to resources and integration outcomes (Martin, 2016). This literature review thus provides a snapshot of the diverse and interconnected research on contemporary migration issues.…”
