This article explores Marx and Engels' infamous theory ideology, which I argue is best understood as a critique of ideation. The piece explores what the pair did and did not say about ideology and similar concepts, focusing on six key terms: alienation, mystification, commodity fetishism, social consciousness, ideology, and false consciousness. I read across the Marxian corpus, from The 1844 Manuscripts and The German Ideology to the three volumes of Capital and Engels' late writings. Along the way, the article advances two fundamental claims: 1) Marx and Engels' views on ideation are more multifaceted than is often assumed; 2) the two authors provide a broad lexicon for the critique of ideation, one that allows for the construction of a dynamic portrait of consciousness within the social totality of capitalism. Ultimately, the account is not designed as a master theory meant to replace all other forms of analysis, Marxist or not. As a result, the critique of ideation operates in tandem with their other intellectual contributions (to economics, history, and the like). Further, it is compatible with perspectives from aesthetics, the natural sciences, and a range of other disciplines. Even so, it offers potent resources for analyzing forms of thought under capitalism, supplementing larger discussions within Marxism and without.

Artikel ini menelisik hubungan antara anggota laskar partai politik sebagai kelompok vigilante, pasar tenaga kerja, dan watak kekerasan di Yogyakarta. Dengan menggunakan teori Karl Marx tentang Relative Surplus Population (RSP) dan lumpenproletariat, artikel ini menempatkan anggota vigilante sebagai angkatan kerja yang terjalin dengan rezim buruh tertentu yang mendisiplinkan pasar tenaga kerja. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa angkatan kerja yang tidak terserap di pasar tenaga kerja formal akhirnya bergabung dengan kelompok vigilante. Mereka adalah angkatan kerja yang tidak memiliki kualifikasi tinggi dalam hal pendidikan dan keahlian. Oleh karena itu, kelompok vigilante memberi mereka pekerjaan di sektor informal. Maka dari itu, mereka membalas budi dengan menjadi alat kampanye para patron vigilante. Kesimpulannya, artikel ini memposisikan mereka sebagai RSP yang stagnan dan RSP pauperism. Karena sifat kekerasan kelompok vigilante, mereka termasuk dalam lumpenproletariat.

The adverse effects of climate change are already apparent with action required to forestall a full blown climate catastrophe. Despite findings that social democratic welfare states – Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden – more proactively respond to climate change through environmental policies that complement public policies promoting economic and social security, even these eco-social welfare state environmental policies are unlikely to avert a climate catastrophe. To avert a catastrophe will require gaining public control over energy policy and countering the power and influence of fossil-extracting industries. In theory, this could be accomplished through existing policy instruments. In reality, it may require establishment of a post-capitalist eco-socialist state, the outlines of which remain uncertain even among leading eco-socialist scholars. To effect either of these paths will require public awareness and support for such action. To that end, we identify public discourses of climate change which reflect these two ways forward as well as four other means of responding to climate change: (1) individual responsibility; (2) local action; (3) technocratic solution; (4) public policy advocacy; (5) balancing power in society; and (6) establishing a post-capitalist society. Despite the latter two discourses being the most likely to support effective action, they are the most marginalized.
