Retention of an endoscopic capsule

Abstract: Capsule endoscopy is a highly advanced, newer technology to look for small bowel diseases. But it has certain contraindications such as bowel narrowing, strictures that have to be ruled out on Barium studies or with computed tomography. We present a rare case of retention of endoscopic capsule even after ruling out stricture or bowel thickening on radiological imaging.

“…1 The most common complication is the retention of the capsule due to intestinal stenosis, which then requires invasive procedures for capsule extraction. 2 The retention of the capsule at the esophageal level should be considered since the incidence of this issue increases in incomplete studies. Studies have shown that 10.1% of cases occur due to other causes, such as age (> 65), transit through the stomach (> 43 minutes), and minutes in the small intestine (> 286).…”

“…A wireless digestive tract device might offer advantages because it will not be limited by body position or sex differences. However, occlusion and retention in the GI tract are another consideration for this type of device [ 69 , 70 ].…”

“…In addition, the determination of the exact location of a retained capsule (i.e., distinguishing between small or large bowel) by plain abdominal X-ray may be challenging. To overcome these drawbacks, the use of CT has been therefore suggested (54,56,64). CT can give a precise capsule location ( Figure 1) and provide data about the cause of CR, however it implies the exposure to a higher dose of ionizing radiations.…”
