Retention Characteristics of Attachment Systems for Implant Overdentures

Abstract: Results suggest that the attachment systems evaluated may be grouped into high (ERA gray), medium (Locator LR white, Spheroflex ball, Hader bar & metal clip, ERA white), low (Locator LR pink), and very low (Shiner magnet, Maxi magnet, Magnedisc magnet) retention characteristics.

“…The existing evidence base describing retention differentials across interimplant differences is limited, with the majority of the precedent literature focusing on the retentive characteristics of locators on arbitrary or fixed interimplant distances only. 4,20,22 Only a single study has described the effect of interimplant distance on the retentive features of attachment systems 25 ; however, this study did not investigate the influence of the locator attachment itself. The results of the present study demonstrated that interimplant distance was associated with the initial retention of 3i locator attachments.…”

“…3 Using conventional complete dentures in these patients will not always result in optimal treatment outcomes. 4 Therefore, alternatives should be taken into account. Several studies have shown that poor retention and stability could be managed using a fixed partial denture supported by between five and six implants.…”

“…Furthermore, it is still debatable which type of material is less subjective to wear and allows maintaining constant retention of prosthesis. Few studies have investigated retentive force changes of resilient attachments during fatigue simulation [23][24][25] . However, there is little known about the relationship between retention loss, dimensional changes and surface wear patterns of these attachments 26) .…”

“…ERA gray into high, Locator LR White, Spheroflex ball, Hader bar and clip, ERA White into medium, Locator Pink into low, Shiner magnet, maxi magnet, magnedisc magnet into very low retention. 5 Mariko kobayashi compared the retentive force of O ring and several retained system for one piece root form implant retained overdenture and found that when the medium sized O ring, PMMA and HC were used, an appropriate retention were obtained for the ND implant retained overdenture. …”
