Resveratrol Sensitizes Selectively Thyroid Cancer Cell to 131-Iodine Toxicity

Abstract: Background. In this study, the radiosensitizing effect of resveratrol as a natural product was investigated on cell toxicity induced by 131I in thyroid cancer cell. Methods. Human thyroid cancer cell and human nonmalignant fibroblast cell (HFFF2) were treated with 131I and/or resveratrol at different concentrations for 48 h. The cell proliferation was measured by determination of the percent of the survival cells using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Results. Findings … Show more

“…The natural product resveratrol was found to exhibit a diverse range of biological activities in diseases associated with oxidative stress ( 1 ). As a polyphenolic natural product, resveratrol is automatically synthesized by plants in response to fungal attack or exposure to ultraviolet light ( 2 ).…”

“…The in vitro inhibitory effects of resveratrol on thyroid cancers have been documented. For instance, resveratrol enhances the rates of 131 I-induced cell death of thyroid cancer cell [ 45 ] and is able to suppress growth and to overcome retinoic acid resistance of human anaplastic thyroid cancer cells [ 13 ]. However, the in vivo impact(s)/influences of resveratrol in stepwise thyroid cancer formation is still lesser known.…”

“…More importantly, resveratrol sensitizes selectively thyroid cancer cells to 131-iodine toxicity, while it exhibited radioprotective effects on normal cells, thus for these beneficial actions, resveratrol might improve the treatment of patients with thyroid cancer during radioiodine therapy [63].…”
