Resveratrol reduces lipid peroxidation and increases sirtuin 1 expression in adult animals programed by neonatal protein restriction

Abstract: Resveratrol (Res) has been associated with protective effects against oxidative stress. This study evaluated the effect of Res over lipid peroxidation, antioxidant defense, hepatic sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), which up-regulates antioxidant enzymes, and copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD) in adult offspring whose mothers were protein restricted during lactation. Lactating Wistar rats were divided into control (C) group, which were fed a normal diet (23% protein), and low-protein and high-carbohydrate (LPHC) gro… Show more

“…Notably, resveratrol is shown to increase expression of sirtuin 1, a mammalian NAD + -dependent deacetylase (class III HDAC) (Franco et al, 2010). In the present study, resveratrol upregulated expression of mRNAs for FOXO-1, FOXO-3, p21, p27, AIF, and sirtuin 1 in MH7A cells but otherwise downregulated expression of the Bcl-X L mRNA, without affecting expression of mRNAs for p53, Bcl-2, Bad, Bax, or Bak.…”

“…Furthermore, increased SIRT1 has been associated with lower adiposity and protection against dietinduced metabolic disorders (Banks et al 2008, Pfluger et al 2008. Therefore, we reasoned that SIRT1 expression may be altered by programming and/or calcium treatment, as we have previously reported for other programming models (Franco et al 2010, Trotta et al 2011. (Marques et al 2009).…”
