Resveratrol inhibits phosphorylation within the signal transduction and activator of transcription 3 signaling pathway by activating sirtuin 1 in SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells

Abstract: The present study assessed the mechanism by which resveratrol (Res) inhibits the growth of SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells and examined whether sirtuin 1 (Sirt1) activation affects phosphorylation within the signal transduction and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway. The present study used SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells in the logarithmic phase of growth (control and treatment groups). The latter group was treated with Res at 25 and 50 µmol/l for 24 h, and cell viability, proliferation and apoptos… Show more

“…Jin et al . indicated that treatment with SIRT1 agonist resveratrol in vitro induced apoptosis, inhibited proliferation, and affected phosphorylation within the STAT3 signaling pathway by activating Sirt1 in SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells 47 . However, the role of SIRT1 in oncogenic and tumor-suppressive function in chondrosaroma still remains to be clarified.…”

“…PIWIL2 has already been demonstrated to inhibit cell apoptosis through the activation of the Stat3/Bcl-XL pathway (34). Similar to Bcl-XL, Bcl-2 and caspase 3 are also regulated by STAT3, which leads to cell apoptosis (35)(36)(37). In our study, we determined that downregulated expression of PIWIL2 led to the increased expression of cleaved caspase 3 while it inhibited Bcl-2 expression, which meant that PIWIL2 may inhibit glioma cell apoptosis by suppressing nuclear to mitochondrial translocation as well as the subsequent caspase activation.…”

“…Resveratrol, a dietary phytochemical found in various plant species, has shown antitumor effects on several types of malignant tumors [81]. Jin et al investigated the effect of resveratrol on tumor growth and sirtuin 1 activity in chondrosarcoma cells [82]. They reported that resveratrol showed antitumor effects, including the inhibition of cell viability and proliferation, the induction of apoptosis, and the suppression of phosphorylation within the STAT3 signaling pathway, in chondrosarcoma cells.…”
