Resveratrol inhibition of Propionibacterium acnes

Abstract: Objectives: To evaluate the effects of the anti-inflammatory hydroxystilbene, resveratrol, on Propionibacterium acnes growth. Methods: Three different strains of P. acnes were tested against resveratrol at concentrations between 0 and 200 mg/L. Piceatannol was included as a second hydroxystilbene to compare with resveratrol, and erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide were used as positive controls. Results: After 24 h of treatment with resveratrol, the average 50% inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) was 73 mg/L and the… Show more

“…In addition, other important contributing factors include several hormones and host nutritional status (Kurokawa et al, 2009;Lyte et al, 2009). One explanation for the chronic nature of the disease is that P. acnes induces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, as well as other inflammatory mediators, which attract leukocytes to the site of infection and thereby set up a cascade of inflammatory responses, which also involve the production of reactive oxygen species and other radicals, all of which in combination lead to the development of the acne lesion (Docherty et al, 2007;Kurokawa et al, 2009).…”

“…Conventional therapy has targeted the development of the lesions, by means of retinoic acid analogues and other compounds, and antibiotics directed against the bacterium (Docherty et al, 2007). Needless to say, the continued application of antibiotics entails the risk of resistant bacteria emerging.…”

“…Micronized zinc oxide 10 10 inflammatory response, which creates the classic acne comedones [10]. Knowing how this bacterium is involved in the pathogenesis of acne has clinical implications in the treatment of the disease, as it provides a specific direction in order to reach the best results [9].…”

“…In this study, we used tea tree associated with resveratrol, which is a natural compound produced by some spermatophytes such as grape [10]. It is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound and it has been shown to possess anti-neoplastic activity, as well as capacity to assist in the healing of wounds [13].…”
