Resveratrol: How Much Wine Do You Have to Drink to Stay Healthy?

Abstract: Resveratrol is a naturally occurring stilbene endowed with multiple health-promoting effects. It is produced by certain plants including several dietary sources such as grapes, apples, raspberries, blueberries, plums, peanuts, and products derived therefrom (e.g., wine). Resveratrol can be isolated and purified from these biological sources or synthesized in a few steps with an overall high yield. This compound and its glucoside, the trans-polydatin piceid, have received worldwide attention for their beneficia… Show more

“…A similar health benefit from resveratrol was also reported for cardiovascular protection and neuroprotection against stroke in a different clinical setting [8]. In contrary there were other clinical studies challenged the beneficial effect of resveratrol to human health [21] suggesting further studies are needed to confirm the current findings which are still at best very exploratory.…”

“…1), such as pterostilbene, oxyresveratrol, or viniferins, are the most famous stilbenes due to their diverse potent biological activities and medicinal properties and have been extensively studied (Kalantari and Das 2010;Pangeni et al 2014;Estrela et al 2013;Xu et al 2014;Wang and Yao 2015). Resveratrol has been shown to possess antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antiangiogenic effects and a wide range of health benefits, such as cancer chemoprevention or cardioprotection (Kalantari and Das 2010;Pangeni et al 2014;Weiskirchen and Weiskirchen 2016). A number of other stilbenoids ( Fig.…”
