Resurrecting dead-water phenomenon

Abstract: Abstract. We revisit experimental studies performed by Ekman on dead-water (Ekman, 1904) using modern techniques in order to present new insights on this peculiar phenomenon. We extend its description to more general situations such as a three-layer fluid or a linearly stratified fluid in presence of a pycnocline, showing the robustness of dead-water phenomenon. We observe large amplitude nonlinear internal waves which are coupled to the boat dynamics, and we emphasize that the modeling of the wave-induced drag… Show more

“…Using Gauss's theorem to the volume integrals in (20), and using also that (d/dt)  S c φ 0 n 1 dS =  S c (∂φ 0 /∂t)n 1 dS along the geometric surface S c , we obtain for the force (21) is rewritten by…”

“…19 A two-dimensional model scale experiment has emphasized the role of nonlinearity and non-stationarity in the dead water problem, see Mercier, Vasseur, and Dauxois. 20 The purpose of the paper is to perform strongly nonlinear calculations in three dimensions, of the dead water resistance on a ship and the wave wake in subcritical conditions, where the internal wave resistance is the largest. Various properties at critical speed are investigated.…”

“…Oceanic internal waves [443][444][445][446][447][448][449], whose existence is known as "dead water" in the Viking age [450,451], are subject of great interest for oceanographers for their strong energy transport between continental shelf and deep water, their effects on phytoplankton and fishery, and the effects on ships, submarines, marine architecture, oil platforms, underwater communications, and sonar, as well as the effects on underwater workers. A comprehensive report on the oceanic internal waves is available with the principles and examples in [452].…”

“…Следует отметить, что волновое движение на поверх-ностях раздела обладает целым рядом особенностей, в частности, реализуется нелинейный обмен энергий между гравитационными волнами на одной поверхности при катализационном участии волн, бегущих по другой поверхности [10], а также наблюдается такое явление как эффект " мертвой воды", реализующийся в много-слойной системе несмешивающихся жидкостей [11,12]. Можно выделить и другие интересные эффекты [13][14][15][16].…”
