Resurgence of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus in Egypt following two years of decline during the COVID-19 pandemic: outpatient clinic survey of infants and children, October 2022

Abstract: Introduction Two years after unprecedented low rates of circulation of most common respiratory viruses (SARS-CoV-2), the Egyptian ARI surveillance system detected an increase in acute respiratory infections (ARIs) with a reduced circulation of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), especially among school children. A national survey was conducted to estimate the burden and identify the viral causes of ARIs among children < 16 years of age. … Show more

“…In the post-COVID era, we are still learning about the long-term consequences of the COVID-19 disease. However, cases of COVID-19 have already been described as a predisposing factor in the occurrence of other viral infections, such as the Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Influenza virus [27,28]. Therefore, the already described cases of JCV infection preceded by COVID-19 disease in kidney transplant recipients are not surprising [21].…”

“…Despite this positive collateral effect on preventing additional overload of the healthcare system in the short term, the lack of immune stimulation due to the declined circulation of pathogens induced an “immunity debt” which may result in negative consequences when the COVID-19 pandemic is controlled and NPIs are lifted [ 6 , 7 ]. In fact, in the post- COVID-19 era with the lifting of strict NPIs, many countries and regions have reported significant resurgence of influenza circulation [ 8 , 9 ]. Influenza rebound following three seasons of inactivity was also observed in China after gradually easing NPIs.…”

“…ARI's integrated surveillance system monitors the activity of influenza and SARS-CoV-2 at 12 influenza like illness (ILI) and 17 severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) sentinel sites located in 19 governmental hospitals, plus the Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL) and a network of five regional laboratories. Surveillance started to monitor RSV in 2016 among children less than two years to better understand the epidemiology and disease trends in Egypt 10 . The surveillance reported a drastic reduction in influenza and RSV activity early in the COVID-19 pandemic, which persisted in varying degrees throughout, a finding noted by other researchers 7 , 10 .…”
