Resumption of daily physical activity after day-case laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Abstract: Recovery of daily physical activity exceeded 1 week in most patients undergoing day-case laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The use of an accelerometer and standardized encouragement accelerated recovery in women.

“…Another study carried out with an accelerometer in postoperative care by Wasowicz-Kemps et al including an intervention group ( n  = 36) and a control group ( n  = 28) which both wore an accelerometer (PAM Model AM101, PAM B.V., Doorwerth, The Netherlands), performed measurements one week before a laparoscopic cholecystectomy until one week after surgery [19]. The control group received no feedback from their accelerometers as the display was turned off, while the intervention group did receive physical activity feedback from the display after surgery and also received personal advice regarding their physical activity.…”

“…The definition for recovery of physical activity levels was that the mean activity level was at 90% or above of the mean baseline activity level, a definition which is commonly used in similar type of research [19]. This was calculated for both step count and mean moderate physical activity intensity (MVPA).…”

“…Apart from prolonged convalescence, it increases length of hospital stay and may necessitate resort to rescue opioids [4]. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has evolved to being a day-care ambulatory surgical procedure [15]. To facilitate this, a variety of analgesic interventions have been studied.…”

“…To facilitate this, a variety of analgesic interventions have been studied. None of these have addressed the issue in totality [4,14], which remains a concern to surgeons [5,15]. Pain remains the cardinal index of postoperative inflammatory symptom complex.…”

“…The goals must be challenging but cannot exceed the person's capacity. There is a linear relationship between the degree of goal setting and achievement, and a factor for success to increase physical activity is to set goals for steps taken [19,21] Use of individual goals after laparoscopic cholecystectomy has previously been shown to have an impact on women's recovery [22].…”
