Results of Thyroglossal Duct Cysts and Fistulas Surgery in Our Clinic

Anahtar Sözcükler: Fistül, kist, sistrunk operasyonu Aim: In this study, we aimed to discuss the examination findings, clinical features and treatment methods in 72 patients, who were operated for thyroglossal duct cyst, in the light of the relevant literature. Methods:We retrospectively analyzed the medical reports of 72 patients who were operated due to thyroglossal duct cyst in our clinic.Results: Forty-eight patients were male and 24 were female. The age at presentation ranged from 10 to 56 years (average age: 16.8±15.7 years). The most common complaint was fistula point at the middle region of the neck (58%). Rarely, a nodule or intermittent secretion was being at the middle of the neck in patients. Fistula point or nodule was settled at the midline of the neck and thyrohyoid zone in 16 patients. Clinic presentation was a fistula in 38 patients and a cyst in 34 patients. Sistrunk operation was performed in all patients.Conclusion: Thyroglossal duct cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with neck swelling and discharge from the midline. Thyroglossal duct cysts should be treated surgically due to the risk of malignant transformation. Sistrunk surgery, with its low recurrence rate and low risk of complications, is the gold standard in the treatment of thyroglossal duct cysts.
