“…Super-superobese is considered a challenging field in bariatric surgery because of the high rate of morbidity and mortality related to multiple medical, surgical, and anesthetic risks [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The best surgical treatment in this population to achieve optimal weight loss is still a matter of concern.…”

“…Bariatric surgery in superobese (BMI>50 kg/m 2 ) and super-superobese (BMI>60 kg/m 2 ) patients can be a formidable technical and therapeutic challenge [1][2][3][4][5][6]. These patients often present multiple medical, surgical, and anesthetic risks, and surgical treatment is mandatory because other available regimens are without effect.…”

“…Therefore it is clear that the identification of preoperative selection criteria is a priority. There have been a few papers in the international literature that have recently addressed this topic [1,4,6]. Dixon et al [6] found that older age, hyperinsulinemia, and impaired physical ability were predictive of a significantly lower %EWL at 1 year of follow-up after LAP-BAND placement.…”

“…Although several studies have reported long-term followup with good results in terms of weight loss, the patients selection criteria remain controversial [1][2][3][4]. Factors that would objectively exclude or indicate candidates for LAP-BAND remain unknown in spite of long-term studies and the large number of operated patients.…”

“…L'expérience de 28 centres italiens a étudié 239 superobèses parmi 1 797 patients ayant eu un Lap-Band ® [12] : à quatre ans, pour 75 patients l'IMC est passé de 54,6 à 39,3 kg/m 2 . S'il est logique de proposer chez ces superobèses un court-circuit, certains préfèrent mettre d'abord un anneau et recourir à une technique plus complexe uniquement en cas d'échec.…”
