Results of surgical excision of urethral prolapse in symptomatic patients

Abstract: Surgical excision of urethral prolapse is a reasonable treatment option in patients who have tried conservative management without relief, as well as in those who present with severe symptoms. Possible complications following excision include postoperative bleeding and recurrence, and patients must be counseled accordingly. In this work, we propose a treatment algorithm for symptomatic urethral prolapse.

“…1 Urethral prolapse and UC are diseases of different severity on the same spectrum; urethral prolapse is a circumferential protrusion of the urethral mucosa, while UC does not circumscribe the urethral meatus. 3 In our case, the onset of UTI may be attributed to urinary stasis caused by UC. Recurrent UTI provides a chronic inflammatory state in the urinary tract, which promotes enlargement of the tumor and further aggravation of urinary stasis.…”

“…1,2 Such symptomatic UC requires surgical removal with attention to postoperative bleeding and urinary retention. 3 The etiology of UC has not been fully understood. One theory hypothesizes that chronic irritation in the urethra is associated with its pathogenesis, which stands on the fact that hemorrhage and chronic inflammation is often observed in the histology of UC.…”

“…В научной литературе можно встретить такие названия, как пролапс уретры, пролапс слизистой оболочки уретры, которые являются синонимами. Анализ отечественной и зарубежной литературы свидетельствует о том, что публикаций по данной проблеме очень мало [9][10][11][12][13][14]. На основании клинического течения заболевания выделяют различные виды пролапса слизистой уретры.…”
