Results of surgery for Crohn's disease in the Glasgow region, 1961–70

Abstract: During the period 1961-70, 283 patients in the Glasgow region have been studied with regard to the outcome of 418 surgical procedures performed for Crohn's disease. Resection was followed by an overall recurrence rate of 33 per cent, but in disease confined to the large bowel the rate was 18 per cent. Exploratory operations and bypass procedures were followed by a recurrence rate of 70 per cent. Evidence is provided that recurrence following bypass procedures for small bowel disease and ileocolitis occurs at a… Show more

“…The septic complication rate after strictureplasty was similar or lower to that (3-50 percent) after bowel resection for Crohn_s disease. [82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91] Other complications included hemorrhage, ileus, wound infection, and bowel obstruction, but their incidence was low. Although major hemorrhage was rare, several patients, especially after multiple strictureplasties, required angiography to identify the bleeding site and intra-arterial vasopressin infusion.…”

“…Abdominal surgery for IBD is not without risk. Postoperative complication rates are higher in patients with Crohn's disease than in non‐inflammatory controls10–12. Among patients with Crohn's disease undergoing surgery, between 6 and 45 per cent have postoperative complications13, 14 and mortality rates range from 0·5 to 5·5 per cent15, 16.…”

“…8,9 Numerous studies have demonstrated the ability of a variety of imaging modalities to predict disease activity [10][11][12][13][14] and have attempted to distinguish between inflammatory and fibrotic strictures. [15][16][17][18][19] However, to date no study has been able to accurately characterize the presence of or assess the degree of fibrosis in an intestinal stricture.…”
