Results of sphincteroplasty in 86 patients with anal incontinence

Abstract: Our study suggests that in the long term, one-third of patients are totally continent after sphincteroplasty. One-half of patients are satisfied, but only if their incontinence to feces has totally disappeared. Results of sphincteroplasty deteriorate with time. One factor in poor prognosis is the presence of an associated defect of the internal anal sphincter.

“…19 Short-term loss of efficacy has been previously described in a study of 86 patients. 20 Forty-two (49%) of the patients had complete fecal continence after repair, but during a mean followup of 40 months, only 21 (28%) of the patients had perfect continence. 20 Longterm loss of efficacy was also reported in a study of 191 patients.…”

“…Skirtingų gydymo metodų rezultatų lyginimas tarpusavyje yra sudėtingas, kadangi įvairios klinikos naudoja skirtingas išmatų nelaikymo vertinimo skales (Wexnerio, Vaizey, Pescatori ir daug kitų) [14,15]. Be to, išmatų nelaikymo vertinimas naudojant skales yra subjektyvus, kadangi pacientas pats vertina savo gyvenimo kokybę ir gali nesakyti tiesos, ne visada teisingai įvertina savo būklę.…”
