Results of Renal Transplantation in Patients With Schistosoma Infection

Abstract: Patients with schistosomal infection are suitable recipients for kidney transplantation, although they are at risk for urological complications. Unlike other infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, the risk of recurrence due to reactivation of chronically hosted pathogens seems to be low or absent in patients who received antischistosomal chemotherapy at the pre-transplant evaluation. Long-term urological followup is recommended, including urethrocystoscopy, because of the theoretically increased risk for b… Show more

“…Bout et al [20,21] reported a curative and protective effect of cyclosporin against primary and secondary S. mansoni in mice and rats. However, this observation was not supported by others, as schistosomal re‐infection was diagnosed in patients receiving cyclosporin [10,11,13].…”

“…There was no correlation between the schistosomal antibody titre and incidence or frequency of graft rejection [13]. Gazzinelli et al [14] showed that the titres of anti‐schistosomal antibodies decline and stabilize as the infection progresses.…”

“…For Strongyloides, 55% of our panel recommended an intermediate delay (C; 2) (Table ) . The panel noted that the approach to Schistosoma infection depends on the clinical scenario.…”

“…However, there was no significant difference in graft rejection, recipient survival rate, and the incidence of malignancy between these two groups. The risk of recurrence because of reactivation of chronically hosted pathogens post renal transplantation appears to be low in patients who received antischistosomal chemotherapy at pretransplant evaluation 3 . In patients with recurrent urological complications and a compatible travel history, urinary schistosomiasis should be considered and biopsy may be indicated to exclude this uncommon aetiology.…”
