Results of intradermal tests in horses without atopy and horses with atopic dermatitis or recurrent urticaria

Abstract: A significantly greater number of positive reactions for IDT in horses with AD or RU, compared with horses without atopy, provides evidence of type-I IgE-mediated hypersensitivity for these diseases. Evaluation of results of IDT performed in horses with AD or RU is useful in determining specific allergens for the formulation of immunotherapy along with providing identification of allergens that could be useful when creating avoidance strategies.

“…Among the animals of atopic dermatitis, the mouse, guinea pig (Fukuda et al, 2003), cat (Schleifer and Willemse, 2003), dog (Mueller et al, 2004) and horse (Lorch et al, 2001) are used. Mouse model of atopic dermatitis gets wider acceptance.…”

“…Blood was drawn for hematology and serum biochemistries. A 40-by 30-cm area was shaved over the right shoulder, and an intradermal test (IDT) was performed using 62 allergens regionalized to Northern California (Table 1) 4 and obtained as concentrates from Greer Laboratories (Lenoir, North Carolina 28645, USA). All allergens were stored in the original glass vials in a standard refrigerator, at approximately 0-4ЊC, and diluted 24 hr before the IDT.…”

“…16 It has been typified best in dogs, 10,16,17 but similar entities have been described in cats 8,12 and horses. 4,5 Steroid-responsive pruritic dermatoses of suspect allergic origin have been reported for llamas (Llama glama). 13 This report describes a case of atopic dermatitis in a Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) where the use of intradermal testing resulted in successful hyposensitization therapy.…”

“…Additionally, exhaled breath condensate has been introduced to evaluate inflammation markers in the lung (Wyse et al, 2005). In the search for potential allergens involved in RAO, an intra-dermal skin test and serum IgE analysis have been evaluated, but these have not proven to be clinically reliable in horses (Lorch et al, 2001;Lebis et al, 2002). Bronchial brushings, BAL, tracheal lavage, exhaled breath condensate, and even lung tissue samples have been shown to be of value in the investigation of the inflammatory process in the equine lung (Bureau et al, 2000;Gerber et al, 2003;Wyse et al, 2005).…”
