Results of intradermal tests in horses without atopy and horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Abstract: Positive results of IDT document allergen-specific hypersensitivity but do not necessarily distinguish clinically relevant reactions from subclinical reactivity in horses with COPD. Interpreting the clinical relevance of results of IDT requires a thorough knowledge of the medical history, physical examination findings, and environment of each animal.

“…T h e y are comparable to previous results, but the security coefficient is much higher than previously. Note the significant positive d i fference between healthy horses and horses with allerg i c respiratory disease to C u l e x and Dermatophagoides farinae, w h i c h is different from that observed by Lorch et al (2001c). A great part of the differences found previously according to age, season or breed have disappeared.…”

“…Sloet Van Oldruitenborg h - Oosterban et al (1996) proposed the use of these allergens at lower dilution. Lorch et al (2001c) considered that allergens with a positive test result in >25% of normal horses were irritants.…”

“…Horses with atopic dermatitis and recurrent hives generally have a higher incidence of positive reactions than healthy horses, but the diagnosis (as in other species) cannot solely be made on the basis of the intradermal test or serological testing alone (Lorch et al . ,b,c). The testing should be interpreted in light of the history of the disease and used to determine which allergens might be useful in ASIT, should the owners elect that route of treatment.…”

“…Actually, few studies have been performed with monoclonal antibodies (Wagner et al 2003) or with the α chain of the IgE receptor (Lorch et al 2001a) to allow specific detection of equine IgE. Additionally, direct testing of the horse's skin has not proven useful for diagnostic purposes since most horses give a positive skin reaction to common barn allergens, even though horses with RAO tend to have a stronger positive skin reaction (Eyre 1972;Schatzmann and Gerber 1972;Evans et al 1992;Mcgorum et al 1993;Lorch et al 2001b). Furthermore, another study suggests that a higher concentration of A. fumigatus mixture in the skin test may be needed to detect horses sensitive to this antigen group (Wong et al 2005).…”
