Results of endovenous ClosureFast treatment for varicose veins in an outpatient setting

Abstract: GSV and an occlusion of all treated SSV. One pulmonary embolism had occurred. Mean patient's satisfaction was 8.7 (10=very satisfied), pain after one week 2.0 (no pain=0, maximal=10) and absence of work was 0.9 day (range 0-14 days). Conclusions: RFA for incompetent saphenous veins can safely be performed in an outpatient setting with a low complication rate, minimal pain and fast recovery.

“…Bisang and colleagues performed RFA on 16 SSVs over a 2-year period and also demonstrated 100% occlusion. 17 One PE was noted in their series. There were no reported long-term nerve injuries in either study.…”

“…8 Outpatient radiofrequency ablation (ClosureFast; Covidien, Dublin, Ireland) and EVLT are under investigation. 8,9 EVLT delivers energy directly to the endothelial lumen, resulting in non-thrombotic vein occlusion as a result of collagen contraction, denudation of endothelium, vein wall thickening, microperforation and eventual luminal contraction and fibrosis. 1,5 This is aided by tumescent anaesthesia providing a heat sink and compression of the vein against the laser fibre.…”

“…8 Moreover, there is increased development in the use of endovenous ablation and tributary procedures in outpatient settings. 9 At our centre, we aim to perform all the tributary procedures required in a single visit. Further procedures are necessary for the anterior thigh vein or short saphenous system varicosities.…”

“…19,32,46 The improvement in the perioperative period was better with RFA than with open surgery; 18,19,21 however, this difference disappeared after a few weeks. Gale and colleagues 41 reported no significant difference in improvement in quality of life between RFA and laser treatment.…”
