Results of Electromyostimulation Therapy in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Abstract: Innovative muscle stimulation techniques have become alternatives for therapy of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome breathing disorders. In group I, an individually shaped mouth floor electrode (IME) and in group II, an individually adaptable multi-point electrode (MPE) on a silicone carrier has been used for electromyostimulation (EMS) therapy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The enoral-cutaneous EMS was carried out with the low-frequency stimulation apparatus I-pulse over a period of 8 weeks, two time… Show more

“…Modified mortised genioplasty was described for the treatment of OSA to maximize advancement of the geniohyoid (Hendler et al, 2001). Electromyostimulation therapy was reported to be effective, suggesting it can be used as a long-term or interval therapy (Ludwig, 2008). Hypoglossal nerve neurostimulation also showed promising results for the treatment of OSA, and a topographical map was suggested (Bassiri Gharb et al, 2015).…”

“…Electrical stimulation of upper airway muscles and nerves can produce contractions of the tongue and can be utilised for OSA treatment as either a training device for the muscles or for night time relief of symptoms [5-7,136-139]. These types of stimulation can induce transformations of the fibre types in the upper airway muscles that may improve the fatigability of the muscle [6].…”

“…Arwed Ludwig et al. (62) of MGK Medical and the Cranio‐Maxillofacial Hospital, Kassel, Germany reported on results of electromyostimulation (EMS) therapy in obstructive sleep apnea. In group I, an individually shaped mouth floor electrode and in group II, an individually adaptable multi‐point electrode on a silicone carrier was used for EMS therapy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.…”
