Results of common laboratory tests in solvent-exposed workers

Abstract: These results suggest a multi-system health effect of solvents. The laboratory data had some similarities with those in the metabolic syndrome. The screening and diagnostics of solvent-related conditions should be based on a thorough work history and a set of carefully selected laboratory tests. No single test seems sufficient for this purpose.

“…Despite the fact that some of these compounds are not considered carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a mixture of them or some individual metals can contribute to increase the risk of cancer [4,5], neurological issues [6], hearing loss [7], and hepatic [8] and respiratory [9] diseases. The exact mechanism of such damages is not fully understood, but it is known that occupational exposure to organic solvents [3,[10][11][12] and some metals [13][14][15] can induce oxidative stress and DNA damages.…”

“…Exposure to organic solvents has been associated with neurological effects [Ritchie et al, 2001;Yu et al, 2004], genotoxic effects [Roma-Torres et al, 2006], multiple system health effects [Kaukiainen et al, 2004], cancer [Guo et al, 2004;Strom et al, 2005;Clapp et al, 2008], and liver and kidney damage. In this study, although we did not measure the health effects of solvent exposure, we did survey farmers on their perceived risk of exposure and related illness in the family.…”
