C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $ (2.75CaO•1.25BaO• 3Al 2 O 3 • SO 3 ) is one of the important minerals and it governdirectly the early-strength of belite-barium calcium sulphoaluminate cement. In this paper a binary system C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $-C 2 S is selected to investigate the formation of C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $. In the range of 1100 °C-1200 °C, the earlier formed C 2 S hinders the formation of C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $. On the contrary, when the temperature is in the range of 1200 °C-1350 °C, the initially formed C 2 S could provide a surface for the nucleation of C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $ and cut down the potential barrier (ΔG k* ) for the heterogeneous nucleation of C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $, which contributes to its formation. Moreover, at 1350 °C, the large amount of previously formed C 2 S benefits the extent of formation of C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $. The possible reason was that it could prevent sulfur evaporation. In early hydration age, AFm and AFt originating from C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $ hydration are found within 2 h and 12 h under 95% RH at 1 °C, respectively, whereas C 2 S is unhydrated at this moment. ) es una de las principales fases, y regula directamente la resistencia inicial del cemento. En este trabajo, se ha seleccionado el sistema binario C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $-C 2 S para investigar la formación de C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $. En el rango de 1100 °C-1200 °C, el C 2 S formado anteriormente impide la formación de C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $, mientras que cuando la temperatura está entre 1200 °C-1350 °C, el C 2 S proporcionaría una superficie de nucleación de C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $ reduciendo la barrera de potencial (ΔG k* ) para la nucleación heterogénea de C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $, lo que contribuye a su formación. Además, a 1350 °C, la gran cantidad de C 2 S for mado beneficia la formación de C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $, ya que podía prevenir la evaporación del azufre. En las primeras etapas de la hidratación (entre 2 y 12h y 95% HR a 1 ºC) se pueden encontrar AFM y AFt procedentes de la hidratación de C 2.75 B 1.25 A 3 $, mientras que el C 2 S permanece sin hidratar. This paper presents the preliminary results of a study investigating the application of laboratory X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of soils as screening methods for forensic comparison and generalized provenancing. The study area is the Buffalo-Niagara metropolitan region in New York, a glacially draped area of the northeastern USA. For the initial stages of this study, soils are being collected from publicly accessible areas (parks, playgrounds, etc.) for mineralogical and elemental analysis. Initially, minimal sample preparation is being applied to create specimens. An investigation of the published literature reveals that there are a number of different suggested approaches for forensic application of XRD data, not all of which appear to be appropriate to the task at hand. The data being generated in this study are being used to build a reference set for comparison studies. In addition, two simulated forensic samples were collected to test the usefulness of XRD and XRF screening for determining possible regional source areas. For one sample this method was reasonably successful in identifying the general source area, while the results for the second sample were somewhat less satisfactory. In future additional sample handing and analysis protocols will be added.
