Results from the International Cataract Surgery Outcomes Study

Abstract: It is widely accepted that cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation is a highly effective and successful procedure. However, quality assessments and studies of effectiveness should still be undertaken. As with any surgical treatment modality, complications may occur, leading to suboptimal outcomes, additional health costs and deterioration in patients' functional capacity. International variation in clinical practice patterns and outcomes can serve as important pointers in the attempt to identify… Show more

“…The study shows that the odds of a poor outcome increase from borderline to poor preoperative VA. This is consistent with the International Cataract Surgery Outcomes Study, where poor preoperative VA is highlighted as one of the predictors of a poor visual outcome (Norregaard 2007).…”

“…Older age, ocular comorbidity and 'surgical complexity' have also previously been noted as being associated with a worse VA outcome. [9][10][11][12] One of the strengths of our study is the large sample size and the wealth of detailed preoperative data available for analysis. This can only be achieved through prospective routine electronic data collection, the analysis being a by-product of routine clinical care.…”

“…However, as with any surgery, there are complications, which include retinal detachment (0.8%) [2] and endophthalmitis (0.1%) [3]. Risk factors that affect postoperative outcomes include poor preoperative visual acuity, ocular history, age, sex, and race [4][5][6][7][8][9].…”
