Results and prospects of geological mapping of the Arctic shelf of Russia

Abstract: The results of compiling the sets of the State Geological Map at a scale of 1:1,000,000 for the Arctic continental shelf of Russia are analyzed. Results are summed up, and the main problems of geological mapping are outlined. The results of geological and geophysical studies of the Arctic Ocean are of great importance for deciphering the geological evolution. The Arctic shelf is the widest shelf in the world, while the spreading ocean basin is one of the narrowest and is characterized by anomalous structural f… Show more

“…A feature of the lithological composition of Domanik deposits is a large amount of free silica, which is also characteristic of deposits in the marginal part of the Timan and the Urals. The excess of silica is probably associated with the introduction of material from the East Ural basin, which was an area of active volcanism during this period (36). The enrichment of the basin waters with silica contributed to the development of organisms with a flint skeleton, in particular, radiolarians.…”

“…A marine regime was established in most of the region during the Late Jurassic, coinciding with the deposition of sandy-silt-clay sediments. At the end of the Jurassic period, carbonate-rich and bituminous clay silts were deposited in the marine basin [25,26]. During the same period, active movements occurred along the regional Pai-Khoi-Altai strike-slip zone.…”
