Purpose To evaluate ocular movement disorders after scleral buckling surgery (SBS) for retinal detachment. Methods In this prospective, observational, case series, 206 patients (206 eyes) with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment who underwent SBS and investigated at the strabismus ward of Farabi Eye Hospital in Iran between November 2011 and November 2014 were assessed. Patients were followed from 6 to 36 months after SBS to evaluate for strabismus. Logistic regression analysis test and SPSS software version 20 were used for statistical analysis. Results From 206 patients, 56.8% were male, and 33.2% were female. For scleral buckle in 44.7% of patients, silicone band and tire (SBT) was used, and in 55.3%, a sponge. Among all patients, seven (3.39%) exhibited ocular movement disorder. There was no significant relation between type of buckle ( P = 0.65) or the location of buckle ( P = 0.56) and movement disorder. Conclusion Ocular movement disorder is one of the main complications after SBS without specific association between the type and location of exoplanet.

The impact refractive surgery has on preoperative horizontal strabismus is rapidly evolving, and this knowledge can provide valuable clinical context when considering refractive surgery as a treatment for strabismus. 515 studies were identified, of which 26 met the inclusion criteria. Analysis indicated that refractive surgery resulted in an overall decrease in the mean uncorrected postoperative angle of deviation caused partially or fully due to refractive error and highlighted the varied outcome of refractive surgery on nonaccommodative horizontal strabismus with limited evidence to suggest refractive surgery for this type of strabismus. Efficacy of refractive surgery in reducing concomitant horizontal strabismus depends on several factors: type of horizontal ocular deviation, patient age, and extent of refractive error. Refractive surgery can be an effective treatment for refractive accommodative horizontal strabismus in patients with stable, mild to moderate myopia or hyperopia and should be considered with careful patient selection for optimum outcome.

Background: This study aimed to report the clinical characteristics and surgical methods of restrictive strabismus secondary to ophthalmic surgery. Methods: This retrospective case series covered 14 restrictive strabismus cases secondary to ophthalmic surgery. After evaluation of the clinical history and the basic ophthalmological findings, the following parameters were examined: squint angles (prism with alternative cover test, Krimsky’s test or Maddox cross), ocular motility, duction test and the forced duction test. All paitients underwent surgery, the strabismus surgery included the excision of adhesions and scar tissue, adhesiolysis, medial and lateral ligaments separated, repositioning of extraocular muscles (according to the degree of deviations). We described the clinical characteristics and evaluated the surgical results in strabismus eyes. Results: All patients were satisfied with the results of surgery, obtained anatomical reduction and partial functional recovery. In nine cases with preoperative diplopia, eight cases had no diplopia after surgery and one patient’s diplopia disappeared after the secondary surgery. The other five cases without preoperative diplopia, but had restricted ocular motility, which improved significantly than before surgery. Conclusions: Orbital surgery, trauma, conjunctival surgery, strabismus surgery and so on, can lead to secondary restrictive strabismus surgery. Strabismus surgical treatments including the full removal of the muscles around the scar, adhesiolysis, medial and lateral ligaments separated, eye muscle surgery, can provide excellent results and patient’s satisfaction.
