Restraint feeds stress: The relationship between eating disorder symptoms, stress generation, and the interpersonal theory of suicide

Abstract: Integrating research on stress generation and the interpersonal theory of suicide we examined whether eating disorder symptoms are related to stress generation and whether negative life events (stressors) contribute to feelings of burdensomeness and low belongingness. At two time points (approximately one month apart), participants (n = 186; 75% female) completed questionnaires measuring eating disorder symptoms, negative life events, burdensomeness, and belongingness. Regression analyses indicated that while … Show more

“…Present findings are in partially in line with this prediction and offer some initial support this hypothesis. Although the present findings can be interpreted through the IPTS, only a few initial studies have found support for the IPTS in disordered eating samples [43, 44]. Future research is needed to fully test the IPTS in clinical eating disorder samples in order to better understand mechanisms leading to suicide attempts in this population.…”

“…Work by Dodd et al. () found that ED symptoms did not directly predict longitudinal changes in TB. Instead, ED symptoms indirectly predicted greater TB through negative life events.…”

“…Although Dodd et al. () found support for a longitudinal relationship between initial dietary restraint and later TB and PB, this relationship was not direct, and flowed through increased negative life events. Their use of a nonclinical sample and the failure to test for the opposite direction of the relationship (i.e., that TB and PB lead to increases in ED symptoms) are additional limitations.…”

“…Additional research has found that general eating psychopathology is related to suicide risk through both perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness (Dodd, Smith, & Bodell, 2014;Kwan, Gordon, Carter, Minnich, & Grossman, 2017).
