“…Not surprisingly, bulimics took signifIcantly more time to eat than the controls, regardless of the drug. Patients knew that they were subject to possible observation during eating and that they would not be able to purge following the testmeal; this situation may have increased food-related anxiety and avoidance be havior (Katzman and Wolchik 1984;Johnson et al 1986;Davis et al 1988). The effects of the artifIcial nature of this eating paradigm on our results must be ac knowledged.…”

“…In summary, these results indicate the BCDS and MAC are valid and useful instruments for assessing the cognitions of individuals with bulimia nervosa and for evaluating the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral interventions for bulimia nervosa that target cognitive change as a treatment goal. While this research may be criticized for failing to recruit a "clinical" sample of women with bulimia, it is important to note that participants were selected on the basis of a standardized interview, and the bulimic group's RRS, EDE, and MAC scores were comparable to those found in clinical populations of women with bulimia (Johnson, Corrigan, Crusco, & Schlundt, 1986;Mizes, 1992;Wilson & Smith, 1989). Thus, our participants with bulimia nervosa may be as pathological as women with bulimia who seek treatment.…”
