Restoration of Forested Lands under Bauxite Mining with Emphasis on Guyana during the First Two Decades of the XXI Century: A Review

Abstract: given that a spatially driven design can provide much needed knowledge of the restoration/reclamation plan for Bauxite Mine Lands. Ecologically sound designs are a catalyst for devising mechanisms which can (help to) reduce environmental impacts. These designs can also help to boost the velocity at which ecological processes operate, in order to increase the resilience of ecosystems and the connectivity between forest patches and continuous pristine forests.

“…The species richness and Shannon-Wiener Index were increased along with the reclamation age. It shows that natural regeneration and growth can be created in the reclamation areas (Haigh et al 2020;Lewis and Rosales 2020). However, the youngest (1 and 4-yr-old) plantations had the lowest species richness and Shannon-Wiener Index amongst the reclamation areas because of the high mortality rate and limited natural regeneration.…”

“…The panel in Figure 5 [35][36][37][38], below, shows the exploitation of bauxite advancing towards the forests, however, it is important to report that in order to minimize this action, some reforestation programs [39][40][41] have been carried out with the aim of mitigating this situation in view of the environmental assumptions.…”

“…According to Lewis & Rosales [40], reports of bauxite mining in Guyana that resulted in deforestation and soil degradation are unknown and very similar to those of other bauxite-producing countries in South America. These facts show the need for research aimed at the knowledge of these degraded lands and the need for programs to restore these ecosystems.…”

“…eases or enriching soils, thereby contributing to improved crop yields (Crews et al, 2018;Iverson et al, 2014;Ngapo et al, 2021). However, as urban agriculture gains traction in cities plagued by an industrial past, involved residents become more aware of the situation and raise legitimate concerns about soil contamination exceeding local guidelines for open-field cultivation, a phenomenon that may ultimately contribute to the failure of community food production enterprises (Beausoleil, 2010;Laidlaw et al, 2018;Lewis & Rosales, 2020;Peters et al, 2023;Wortman & Lovell, 2013).…”
