Soil is an essential element for plants to grow. Therefore, it is important to understand the influence of soil properties, especially physical and chemical, on plant growth in coal mine reclamation areas. This study aimed to evaluate the growth and diversity of plants at various ages of reclamation and analyze the factors that most influence their growth and diversity. The study analyzed four soil physical properties and eight soil chemical properties. The research was conducted in mine reclamation areas with different ages: 1, 4, 6, 9, and 11-year-old-plantations for vegetation analysis and soil collection. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) analysis was performed using PAST 4.0 statistics program to analyze the data. The results showed that the 9-year-old plantation had the highest mean Shannon Wiener Index (H’= 1.52), mean basal area (35.04 m2/ha), and mean density (469 trees/ha), while the 4-year-old plantation had the highest mean diameter (28.42 cm). The 1-year-old plantation had the highest clay content of 56.28% and the lowest pH of 3.27. The physical properties of the soil affected the growth rate and diversity of the reclamation area more than the chemical properties of the soil. This can be seen from the cumulative proportion of the two PCA values that described the original condition of 71.20% for soil physical properties and 63.10% for soil chemical properties. Based on this study, bulk density affected the diversity while pH impacted other soil chemical properties.

This work aims to demonstrate the importance of knowledge for the formulation of clean technologies in the production of materials and chemical products, which do not go against the interests of society and are centered on environmental preservation. Most chemical processes were conceived at the beginning of the century or in the 1950s, where the principles of preservation of man, the environment and industrial safety were not fundamental requirements in the implementation of these large basic industries. The origin of the raw materials and the multiple industrial technologies adopted in the manufacture of various products and the recovery of industrial waste or other origins are fundamental factors that dictate the quality of the final product. Several industrial processes were presented where the level and type of contaminant is inseparably linked to its origins and the industrial processes imposed. In addition, it is concluded that it is important to develop a critical technical awareness in society, especially in the University, which aims to understand the manufacturing routes of the products and the contaminants generated and/or aggregated during industrial processing, especially in relation to the quality of the products and environmental preservation.

Urban planners are increasingly focused on integrating urban farming as a creative strategy for producing sustainable, local food in underutilized spaces, once occupied by polluting industries, in peri‐urban areas. However, before urban farming's contribution to local self‐sufficiency can be determined, it is crucial to gather quantitative data on the effectiveness of tailored strategies, including polyculture, and the suitability of different vegetables, to adequately assess the value of brownfields. This study aims to provide quantitative agronomic data on a copper‐contaminated urban garden with the dual objective of assessing its capacity for food production and mitigating the spread of soil contamination. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants were grown for one growing season in brownfield soils with different copper concentrations (up to 2000 mg kg−1), accompanied by different plant species assemblages typically used in phytoremediation (Achillea millefolium, Salix discolor, and Trifolium repens). The most successful assemblage yielded over 800 fruits per square meter with low copper concentrations (<5 mg kg−1), indicating that one square meter could satisfy the annual fresh tomato weight requirement of an average individual. Although some amendments can improve adaptability to local soils, the highest fruit‐producing assemblage consisting of S. lycopersicum, S. discolor, and T. repens also proved to be the one of the most effective for copper phytoextraction, removing over 30 g ha−1 from the contaminated soils. Overall, the data indicated that all assemblages phytostabilized copper. The quantitative results of this study provide a valuable benchmark for urban planners and researchers to implement large‐scale urban agriculture on brownfield sites.
