Resting-state Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Presurgical Functional Mapping

Abstract: Synopsis The goal of this article is to compare resting state fMRI with task fMRI as a tool for presurgical functional mapping of the sensorimotor (SM) region. Prior to tumor resection, 38 patients were scanned using both methods. The SM area was anatomically defined using two different software tools. Overlap of anatomical regions of interest with task activation maps and resting state networks was measured in the SM region. A paired t-test showed higher overlap between resting state maps and anatomical refer… Show more

“…Nonetheless, an emerging body of research suggests these network characteristics may depict key properties that relate to functional integrity and prediction of change at the individual patient level (Dierker et al, 2017;Doucet, Rider, et al, 2015;McCormick et al, 2014;McCormick, Quraan, Cohn, Valiante, & McAndrews, 2013;Sair, Agarwal, & Pillai, 2017;Zhou, Liu, Ng, & Wang, 2017).…”

“…In regards to resting-state fMRI, our results suggest that both neuronal desynchronization and neurovascular disruption could contribute to apparent changes in fMRI-based measures of 'functional connectivity' related to tumor progression (Hadjiabadi et al, 2018) (Dierker et al, 2017). Nevertheless, these results do suggest a firm physiological basis for studies which have noted the ability of resting state fMRI data to delineate glioma tumor boundaries (Bowden et al, 2018) (Chow et al, 2016) (Agarwal et al, 2016).…”

“…Rs-FMRI has been investigated as a primary technique for presurgical mapping in patients who are unable to comply with task paradigms. 7,32 To circumvent the challenge of seed placement in brains that have been distorted by lesions, prior studies have used independent component analysis (ICA)based rs-FMRI and compared it with task-based FMRI in the language system. Tie and colleagues compared these 2 techniques in 34 healthy volunteers; the study was primarily focused on the feasibility of defining the language network using ICA.…”
