Resting energy expenditure (REE) in an old-old population: implications for metabolic stress

Abstract: The basis of nutritional therapy and thus an adequate nutrient intake is the assessment of energy need. On the other end, the assessment of individual energy requirements based on the gold standard, indirect calorimetry, is associated with feasibility difficulties in geriatric settings. To identify the most accurate predictive equations for resting energy expenditure (REE) in older subjects with overweight, 17 predictive equations were compared to indirect calorimetry measurement in a study population of 20 ob… Show more

“…Total energy expenditure is the sum of resting energy expenditure (REE), physical activity energy expenditure, and thermic effect of food. The REE accounts for more than 50% of the total daily energy expenditure [ 3 ]. Indirect calorimetry (IC) is considered the reference method to determine the REE through the determination of O 2 consumption and CO 2 production [ 4 ].…”

“…Yet, this is not as straightforward as it seems. A wide variety of formulae has been developed to estimate patients' resting energy expenditure (REE) [6,7]. However, these are mostly based on healthy non hospitalized persons.…”

“…Data on individual TEE is crucial in planning adequate energy and nutrient intake in weight management nutritional intervention. REE is the energy that a person needs to maintain a body at rest [4]. REE can be measured by indirect calorimetry [4][5].…”
