Responsiveness to Vasoactive Agents of Cerebral and Mesenteric Arteries Isolated From Control and Reserpine‐treated Dogs

Abstract: 1 Pretreatment of dogs for 20 to 24 h before the start of experiments with reserpine (0.5 mg/kg) depleted noradrenaline from cerebral and mesenteric arteries, the diminution being greater in the latter arteries. 2 Contractile responses of helically-cut strips of cerebral and mesenteric arteries to noradrenaline were unaffected by pretreatment with reserpine. Tyramine-induced contractions of mesenteric arteries were markedly attenuated by reserpine-pretreatment, whereas the contraction of cerebral arteries was … Show more

“…In addition, vascular responses to nicotine are abolished by bretylium or guanethidine (22,23) and pretreatment of animals with reserpine (24), and nicotine increases the 3H-overflow from isolated, superfused vasculature previously soaked in 3H-norepinephrine, as does electrical nerve stimulation (22). These findings strongly suggest that norepinephrine liberated from adrenergic nerves in the penile artery, corpus and penile vein in response to nicotine stimulates aladrenoceptors and elicits contraction.…”

“…Thirteen dogs were pretreated 20 to 24 hr before the start of experiments with intramuscular injections of 0.5 mg/kg reserpine; norepinephrine con tents in mesenteric and cerebral arteries are diminished by this pretreatment (12). The heart was removed.…”
