Responsiveness of the Oswestry Disability Index and the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire in Italian subjects with sub-acute and chronic low back pain

Abstract: The Italian ODI and RMDQ proved to be sensitive in detecting clinical changes after conservative treatment for subacute and chronic LBP. Our findings are consistent with those published in the literature, thus allowing cross-cultural comparisons and stimulating cross-national studies.

“…Defining MCID threshold for QoL assessments would help identify what level of score improvement an intervention is of noticeable benefit to the patient; therefore, potentially worth the attendant risks. For the ODI, several studies have defined a range of absolute value changes in the overall score as an MCID [44][45][46][47][48]. An analysis of the SENZA-RCT ODI data per the MCID definitions established in these studies demonstrate the responder rates for both traditional SCS and 10 kHz SCS subjects at 12 months which is depicted in Fig.…”

“…It has been proven to be sensitive in detecting clinical changes after conservative treatment of subacute and chronic LBP. 41,42 According to Ostelo and de Vet, 43 the minimal clinically important change (MCIC) of the NRS for patients with subacute or chronic LBP is considered to be 2.5 points, in a scale ranging from 0 to 10. The MCIC of the ODI is considered to be 10 points.…”

“…The high susceptibility of this population to this symptomatology is evident, as only 12 individuals of the sample of this study presented a score equal to or greater than 14 in the RMDQ. The other individuals may have physical disability due to low back pain 18 .…”

“…Three tests were then carried out: 1) Application of the Portuguese language version of the RMDQ for quantification of low back pain, with 24 items with scores of zero or one (yes or no), the sum of which can range from zero (suggesting no disability) to 24 (severe disability). This questionnaire has a cutoff score of 14, that is, individuals with a score greater than 14 have a disability 18 .…”
