Responsiveness of the Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Quality of Life Scale (AAQoL)

Abstract: The AAQoL was responsive to change in symptoms of ADHD, and it appears to be a useful outcome measure for treatments of ADHD in adults.

“…First, the group mean change in score from baseline to follow-up (or equivalently the difference in the mean scores at the two time points) for individuals in a sample is calculated. This mean change in score is divided by the SD of the baseline score: [282][283][284][285][286][287][288][289][290] x follow−up − x baseline SD baseline (8) The SD used varied. An example is given in Box 4 and shows the possible impact of using different SDs to calculate the SES.…”

“…Dumas and colleagues 282 called for further research using an external criterion to investigate clinically meaningful changes. Matza and colleagues 284 specifically state that, although an effect size can be used to assess how small a change in health an instrument can detect, another method (such as an anchor or distribution method) is needed to determine what would be considered a MCID. However, this view is not universally accepted.…”

“…The SF-36 is a short-form health survey with well-documented psychometric properties, consisting of only 36 questions, which can be easily administered (taking approximately 10 min to be filled out by study subjects; Morfeld et al 2005). It has been shown to be responsive to change in adult ADHD (Matza 2007) and can be used to derive preference-based utility scores (''SF-6D,' ' Brazier et al 2002) EQ-5D The EQ-5D is the most widely used index measure of health-related quality of life. Comprised of a mere five questions and a visual analogue scale, it captures five dimensions of quality of life only, and its sensitivity to change in ADHD is unclear.…”
