Responsiveness of methods to evaluate chewing ability after removable partial denture treatments

Abstract: Recovery of impaired masticatory function due to tooth loss is one of the major objectives of prosthetic treatment. Masticatory function is clinically evaluated objectively using a variety of chewing test items and/or subjectively by assessing patient perception using self-administered questionnaires. 1-3 These objective/subjective evaluations are useful to interpret the effects of prosthetic treatment on masticatory function in clinical practice and research settings. Dental patient-reported outcome measures … Show more

“…The responsiveness of the iMP scale may be improved by decreasing the number of chewing strokes for the gum or increasing the hardness of the chewing gum. In the subgroup analysis, lower iMP score in pre‐treatment was associated with greater responsiveness, which agrees with the three MP tests 24 and subjective assessments of masticatory function 30 . A regression to the mean effect is responsible for this association.…”

“…The relationship between masticatory function and dental prosthesis use has been studied before; however, these studies included only a small number of participants or participants with residual natural teeth [9][10][11]. Since natural teeth perform various physiological functions, such as proprioception via the periodontal ligament [23], the presence/absence of natural teeth can significantly affect masticatory comfort [24].…”

“…The use of various restorative modalities allows completely edentulous patients to have different combinations of maxillary and mandibular prostheses.Further, the choice of the prosthetic restorative modality can affect treatment outcomes in a completely edentulous patient. Prosthetic restorations affect the chewing ability and nutrient intake [8][9][10][11], which can further affect the patients' overall health and qual-J Prosthodont Res. 2022; **(**):…”
