Responses to weaning in two pig lines divergently selected for residual feed intake depending on diet1

Abstract: Weaning is a stress every piglet has to face. It is a main cause of antibiotic uses due to digestive disorders. In this study, response to weaning was analyzed in pigs from two lines divergently selected for residual feed intake (RFI) during growth. A total of 132 pigs from each line, housed per line and diet in conventional postweaning units of 12 castrated males and 12 females, were fed either a conventional control (two successive diets) or a complex (three successive diets) dietary sequence during the post… Show more

“…1D), suggesting that these enteric pathogens were weakly correlated with diarrhea in weaning pigs in this study. Abrupt changes in the diet and environment of piglets have been reported as the leading causes of weaning diarrhea 32,33 . Interestingly, there was an enormous increase in members of the fiber-degrader Bacteroidales family S24–7 34,35 when piglets grew up (less than 1.00% in cluster A versus 20.04% in cluster B).…”

“…Therefore, improving FE has been an important part of the breeding goal in commercial pig production for both economic and environmental reasons. A variety of factors that can influence porcine FE, such as genetics (Do et al 2014;Onteru et al 2013;Reyer et al 2017), diseases (Patience et al 2015), environment (Chatelet et al 2018), and diets (Collins et al 2017;Gilbert et al 2018). RFI, defined as the difference between the observed feed intake and predicted feed requirements based on average daily gain and backfat, is a useful criterion to measure net FE based on the biological mechanisms that influence FE (Gilbert et al 2017;Herd and Arthur 2009).…”

“…Postweaning costs were calculated using the experimental data collected from the beginning to the end of postweaning in the two lines. The required data including ADFI, ADG, diet types, and feeding duration are reported in Gilbert et al (2019) . The fattening costs were calculated based on individual traits.…”

“…The cost of feed after weaning was calculated based on a conventional two feed phase dietary sequence, with a starter diet from weaning to day 12 and a postweaning diet until the end of the postweaning period. The ADFI (kg/d) of the two diets in each line under ad libitum access to feed is reported in Gilbert et al (2019) . The cost of feed was calculated by multiplying the average quantity of feed consumed at each stage by the price of the feed in France.…”
