Responses to ozone on Populus "Oxford" clone in an open top chamber experiment assessed before sunrise and in full sunlight

Abstract: The effects of ambient levels of ozone and summer drought were assessed on a poplar clone (Populus maximowiczii Henry X P. × berolinensis Dippel -Oxford clone) in an open top chamber experiment carried out at the Curno facilities (Northern Italy). Chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence parameters (from both modulated and direct fluorescence) were assessed at different hours of the day (predawn, morning, midday, afternoon, and evening), from June to August 2008. This paper compares the results from predawn (PD, befor… Show more

“…Higher differences between O 3 -treated and control plants in the maximum yield of primary photochemistry of PS II (φ Po =TR 0 /ABS) at predawn (dark conditions) was observed by Desotgiu et al (2013). In contrast, minor differences in the maximum yield of primary photochemistry of PS II were observed in our present study, showing that φ Po is the less sensitive parameter to the effect of O 3 and drought.…”

“…Such strategies also include a decrease in the quantum efficiency of primary photochemistry ( F V / F M ), caused by the activation of the xanthophyll cycle and damage to the D1 protein in the PSII RC. These protective processes (nonphotochemical de‐excitation pathways) are combined with an increase in electron transport beyond PSI (increasing values of the IP phase, Δ V IP (Cascio et al ., ; Desotgiu et al ., , ). At the southernmost Mediterranean sites, the depression of PI ABS may be attributed, alongside high solar radiation, to poor soils and dry climate (Peguero‐Pina et al ., ).…”

“…The measurements of ChlF were performed after 4–5 h of sample dark adaptation on 16 leaves for each tree. As sampling was performed at different hours in the day, a long dark adaptation period was necessary to reduce the effects of leaf photoinhibition and of the daily hours of solar radiation exposure (Desotgiu et al ., , ).…”

“…Chl a fluorescence as well as gasexchange measurements were recorded and ecophysiological traits of the plants were measured following standardized protocols (Pérez-Harguindeguy et al 2013). Fluorescence and gas-exchange measurements were not performed between 12:00 h and 14:00 h in order to avoid midday depressions (Demmig- Adams et al 1989, Lichtenthaler et al 2005, Desotgiu et al 2013.…”
