“…Our turnover rates of soil occluded Pi (mean 0.0065 g g −1 day −1 ) and occluded Po (mean 0.0066 g g −1 day −1 ) are the first estimates for the two soil P pools, to the best of our knowledge. These estimates were consistent with some other studies that found a significant change in Hedley occluded P within years or even seasons of plant growth in the field (Fan et al, ; Zhang et al, ) and suggest that Hedley occluded P is more dynamic than previously thought (i.e., Hedley occluded P is a very stable soil P that is hardly available to plants; Cross & Schlesinger, ; Yang et al, ). Noted that we estimated soil occluded Pi and occluded Po pools based on soil residual P fraction and OPo rather than direct measurements.…”

“…Several studies have shown that in N-limited environments, N addition in the form of fertilizers or via atmospheric deposition can contribute to the depletion of different P fractions and can exacerbate P limitation due to increased phosphatase activity and rhizodeposition [ 35 , 60 , 61 , 62 ]. However, our study showed no effect of N addition on P dynamics or transformation.…”

“…Phosphorus dynamics are affected by plant species [ 19 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ]. For instance, legume crops have been found to mobilize more stable P pools than cereals, reflecting divergent P acquisition strategies [ 38 ].…”

“…Nitrogen and phosphorus are primary limiting elements for wetland ecosystems. The ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus (N:P) has an indirect influence on the distribution and transformation of P-fractions by effecting vegetation communities and densities and microbial species and activity [16,28]. Fan et al [28] indicated that nitrogen and phosphorus collectively restrict the incubation process of terrestrial ecosystems, including wetland, agricultural, forest and pasture organisms, and their interaction stimulates a unified complex formation of ecosystems.…”
