Responses of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) to new attractants in Papua New Guinea

Abstract: Male fruit fly attractantscue-lure and methyl eugenol (ME)have been used successfully for decades in the monitoring and control of species of Dacini (Dacinae) fruit flies (Bactrocera, Zeugodacus and Dacus). However, many species, including several pests, are non-responsive to these lures. Field tests of new compounds are therefore worthwhile, particularly in areas of high species diversity where multiple species attractions can provide additional information on lure function. Recent field tests of new male att… Show more

“…We also include known male lure records for each species: cue-lure, methyl eugenol, isoeugenol and zingerone. Zingerone, first reported as a male lure by Tan and Nishida (2000), has received increased attention in recent years, with new lure records, including species not attracted to the two other lures, for a number of species in Australia and Papua New Guinea (Fay 2012, Royer et al 2015, 2017). These records are included in the list, along with previously unpublished new records, indicated as such, from our team’s recent surveys carried out in Taiwan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.…”

“…As part of a project to survey the genetic diversity of potential pest species across Asia and further understand phylogenetic relationships globally (Leblanc et al 2015b, 2016), our team carried out Dacini fruit fly surveys in Vietnam in 2015 and 2017. A number of new country records and undescribed new species were uncovered, greatly aided by the inclusion of the male lure zingerone (Royer 2015, Royer et al 2017) in the trapping. Four new species, which were also included under temporary species names in a recently published phylogeny (San Jose et al 2018), are described here.…”
