“…5b; Tarasov et al, 2009;Bezrukova et al, 2010). In the Lake Kotokel sediments diatoms S. pinnata and P. brevistriata preferring relatively cold water (Finkelstein and Gajewski, 2008) are replaced by comparatively warm-water species A. granulata and A. ambigua ( Fig. 2b; Popovskaya et al, 2002;Bezrukova et al, 2010).…”

“…2b; Bezrukova et al, 2010) mainly involve species that usually prevail during the summer period in a wide range of water temperatures, i.e. between~7e8 C and 18e20 C (Kuz 'mich, 1988;Smol, 1988;Popovskaya et al, 2002;Barinova et al, 2006;Finkelstein and Gajewski, 2008;Rühland et al, 2008;Kuzmin et al, 2009;Wang et al, 2012b). Assuming that water temperature is the primary control for d 18 O diatom values from the LGM/late glacial Lake Kotokel record, then the high-frequency variability on the order of 4.5‰ would result in a theoretical variation of 22.5 C in summer water temperatures.…”

“…The maximum abundance of Salix in the pollen record from the RS29 core as well higher pollen concentrations and influx (Gajewski 1995(Gajewski , 2015b suggest warmer conditions, and possibly a longer growing season prior tõ 6000 cal yr BP. A diatom record from Russell Island adjacent to nearby Prince of Wales Island (Finkelstein and Gajewski 2008) was also interpreted as signaling warmer temperatures prior to 6500 cal yr BP.…”

“…Small araphid fragilarioid taxa are often typical of circumneutral waters in harsh environments and they can comprise >50% of the diatom assemblages in Arctic island lakes (Bouchard et al, 2004). They have been linked with water temperature as well as with water chemistry (Bouchard et al, 2004;Schmidt et al, 2004) and their tychoplanktonic habit (Finkelstein & Gajewski, 2008) may offer considerable advantage over attached forms when light is limiting. A Pinnularia-Eunotia community is typical of small peaty pools generally and especially in such sites in Scotland (Carter & Bailey-Watts, 1981).…”
