Responses of CYP450 dependent system to aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons body burden in transplanted mussels from South coast of Portugal

Abstract: Mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis were cross-transplanted at South Portugal from a reference site (site 1) to a site more contaminated with hydrocarbon compounds (site 2), and vice versa, in an active biomonitoring (ABM) concept, to assess the biotransformation capacity catalyzed by the mixed function oxygenase (MFO) system. Total alkanes (TAlk), the unresolved complex mixture (UCM), and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (TPAHs) concentration increased respectively 6, 4.4 and 4.2 fold relatively to contro… Show more

“…transplanting clean mussels at polluted sites at the same time as polluted mussels are deployed at clean locations, e.g. (Okumus and Stirling, 1998;Maria et al, 2009;Serafim et al, 2011;Lopes et al, 2012). An important plus of mussel caging is the opportunity for producing mussel samples from sites where native mussels are scarce or absent, and the approach also allows for improved control of confounding factors as well as opportunities of controlled manipulations of relevant factors (e.g.…”

“…The biotransformation of foreign chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, was examined by cytochrome P450 activities responsible for phase 1 biotransformation of lipophilic xenobiotics. Several authors have reported that the induction of EROD and DBF enzymes is directly associated with these biotransformation processes, and this may also occur in mollusks (Gagn e et al, 2007;Lopes et al, 2012;Maranho et al, 2015;Siebert et al, 2017). DCF at 200 ng.L À1 significantly decreased the activity of the EROD, in accordance with Falfushynska et al (2014) that observed an inhibition of EROD activity in mussels exposed to NSAIDs.…”
