Inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) are uncommon. Although some studies have explored the distribution and characteristics of IEMs in newborns, the impact of these disorders on hospitalized newborns remains unclear. In this study, we gathered data from 21,840 newborn patients admitted for various medical conditions at the Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from January 2017 and December 2022. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), and genetic analysis were used to elucidate the disease spectrum, incidence rate, and genetic characteristics of IEMs in hospitalized newborns. The results revealed that the incidence of IEMs in hospitalized newborns was 1/377 (58/21,840), with a higher incidence in full-term infants (1/428) than in premature infants (1/3,120). Among the diagnosed genetic metabolic diseases, organic acid metabolism disorders (1/662), amino acid metabolism disorders (1/950), and fatty acid oxidation disorders (1/10,920) were the most prevalent. Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA), especially the isolated form, emerged as the most common IEM, while neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by citrin deficiency (NICCD) and ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTCD) were prevalent in premature infants. Of the 58 confirmed cases of IEMs, 72 variants were identified, of which 31.94% (23/72) had not been reported previously. This study contributes to understanding the incidence and clinical features of IEMs in hospitalized newborns, offering more efficient strategies for screening and diagnosing these disorders.

Invasive plants, like Spartina alterniflora (SA), have a competitive advantage over native flora due to their rapid utilization of vital soil nutrients. This results in the depletion of resources for native plant species, significantly impacting ecosystem diversity and stability. This comprehensive review addresses several key aspects related to SA’s spread and spatial distribution in China’s wetlands. The rapid expansion of Spartina alterniflora is attributed to its high reproductive ability, adaptability to environmental factors like elevated salinity, and ability to disperse its seeds via tides. Spartina alterniflora mainly were found in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fujian, and Shanghai provinces, accounting for more than 90% of China’s total Spartina alterniflora area. Spartina alterniflora rapid growth results in displacement of native species and loss of vital microbial, plant, and animal diversity. Some studies reported that Spartina alterniflora increases carbon storage, while others argue that it weakens this function. The impact of Spartina alterniflora on organic and inorganic carbon requires further research for better understanding dynamics of carbon in coastal wetlands. The controlled growth of Spartina alterniflora can be beneficial in many aspects of the coastal wetlands’ ecosystem. In China, various methods have been employed to control the invasion of SA. Physical control, such as removing the plants and converting them into fertilizer or bioenergy, has been commonly used but has limitations like air pollution and the potential for re-invasion. Chemical herbicides like Imazapyr and Haloxyfop-R-methyl have effectively controlled and prevented re-invasion in specific areas, but their potential adverse impacts are still uncertain. Wetland Park construction, aquaculture development, and substituting native or exotic species with mangroves or reed communities have also been successful. It becomes evident that a long-standing and Contextual approach is necessary to effectively manage the advantages and curtail the drawbacks associated with S. alterniflora across China.

IntroductionAs a crucial component of the nitrogen cycle, ammonia oxidation in soil can be driven by canonical ammonia‐oxidising archaea (AOA) and bacteria, as well as complete ammonia oxidiser (CMX Nitrospira). Land use change can disrupt and alter the soil microbial community and the nitrogen cycle.Materials & MethodsWe compared the soil ammonia‐oxidising microorganisms and ammonia oxidation potentials in a coastal marsh and nearby reclaimed aquaculture ponds, monthly over a 10‐month period in southeastern China. The abundance of ammonia oxidisers was assessed by real‐time quantitative PCR and the community structure of CMX Nitrospira was evaluated by high‐throughput sequencing.ResultsThe ammonia oxidiser community was dominated by AOA in the marsh (91%) and was made up of similar proportions of AOA and CMX Nitrospira in the aquaculture ponds (46%–47%). The CMX Nitrospira community structure changed significantly between habitat types, mainly driven by opposite change in relative abundance of clade B versus clades A.2 and A.3. Aquaculture reclamation decreased the soil potential ammonia oxidation rate (PAO) by an order of magnitude, and AOA was the only significant predictor of PAO among all ammonia oxidiser groups.ConclusionOur results suggest that aquaculture reclamation from coastal marshes would significantly alter the soil ammonia oxidiser community and decrease ammonia oxidation rate, and CMX Nitrospira appear to play a relative larger role in nitrogen cycling in aquaculture ponds.
