Responses of Chlorophyll a Content for Conchocelis Phase of Alaskan Porphyra (Bangiales,Rhodophyta) Species to Environmental Factors

Abstract: Investigations were performed on variations of photosynthetic pigment in conchocelis of Alaskan Porphyra species, P. abbottae (Pa), P. pseudolanceolata (Pe), P. pseudolinearis (Pi) and P. torta (Pt), in response to environmental variables. Conchocelis were cultured under varying conditions of irradiance (0, 10, 40 and 160 µmol photons m-2 s-1), nutrient concentration (0, f/4, f/2 and f) for up to 60 days (with temperature 11°C and salinity 30ppt). Chlorophyll a (Chl a) content was measured by spectrophotometry… Show more

“…We first examined the anti-pollutant effects of P. yezoensis extract on human keratinocytes. P. yezoensis is a seaweed known as a marine medicinal herb that is used in Korea, Japan, and China [ 19 , 21 ]. It is well known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects [ 20 , 23 , 29 ].…”

“…The red seaweed Porphyra is also referred to as “nori” in popular culture. One of the most lucrative macroalgal species in the world, aquaculture accounts for most of its production [ 21 ]. Porphyra yezoensis is abundant in eastern Asian regions [ 22 ].…”

“…Of particular interest is the conchocelis phase because it appears to be the key to its vegetative propagation stage in its heteromorphic life history (López‐Vivas et al, 2015), and it is used for growing seedlings in cultivation of Pyropia (Sahoo et al, 2006; Zhong et al, 2016). It is important to regulate the development of conchocelis for Porphyra aquaculture (Lin & Stekoll, 2013). Temperature is one of the major factors controlling on the growth and development of Pyropia (Ai et al, 2022; Watanabe et al, 2016).…”

“…The genus Porphyra is a red seaweed popularly known as "nori". This is one of the most valuable macroalgal species in the world and most of its production is via aquaculture [13]. The life cycle of Porphyra involves two distinct phases.…”
