Responses of Bacterial Taxonomical Diversity Indicators to Pollutant Loadings in Experimental Wetland Microcosms

Abstract: Urbanization results in higher stormwater loadings of pollutants such as metals and nutrients into surface waters. This directly impacts organisms in aquatic ecosystems, including microbes. Sediment microbes are known for pollution reduction in the face of contamination, making bacterial communities an important area for bioindicator research. This study explores the pattern of bacterial responses to metal and nutrient pollution loading and seeks to evaluate whether bacterial indicators can be effective as a b… Show more

“…The richness and diversity of bacterial communities are important indicators of the stability of aquatic ecosystems [51], as it is closely related to the nutrient content. Thus, they can be used as potential biological indicators [52]. N and P are important nutrients for bacterial survival and reproduction.…”

“…Halotolerant Fusibacter spp. are noted for their capacity to tolerate highly saline ( Serrano et al, 2017 ; Selivanova et al, 2018 ), and HM enriched environments ( Serrano et al, 2017 ; Meng et al, 2021 ; Ghosh Roy et al, 2022 ). Fusibacter spp.…”

“…Analysis of microbial diversity can be important bioindicators for environmental contamination [8] , [9], [10] [11] . Many studies has related larger heterogeneity of microbiome, or larger diversity of functional groups, to superior environmental quality [12] [11], since this can make an ecosystem more dynamic and resilient, on hypothesis of occurrence of atypical events [13].…”
