Soil-mix technology is effective for the construction of permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) for in situ groundwater treatment. The objective of this study was to perform initial experiments for the design of soil-mix technology PRBs according to (i) sorption isotherm, (ii) reaction kinetics and (iii) mass balance of the contaminants. The four tested reactive systems were: (i) a granular zeolite (clinoptilolite-GZ), (ii) a granular organoclay (GO), (iii) a 1:1-mixture GZ and model sandy clayey soil and (iv) a 1:1:1-mixture of GZ, GO and model soil. The laboratory experiments consisted of batch tests (volume 900 mL and sorbent mass 18 g) with a multimetal solution of Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd and Ni. For the adsorption experiment, the initial concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 0.5 mM (2.5 to 30 mg/L). The maximum metal retention was measured in a batch test (300 mg/L for each metal, volume 900 mL, sorbent mass 90-4.5 g). The reactive material efficiency order was found to be GZ > GZ-soil mix > GZ-soil-GO mix > GO. Langmuir isotherms modelled the adsorption, even in presence of a mixed cations solution. Adsorption was energetically favourable and spontaneous in all cases. Metals were removed according to the second order reaction kinetics; GZ and the 1:1-mix were very similar. The maximum retention capacity was 0.1-0.2 mmol/g for Pb in the presence of clinoptilolite; for Cu, Zn, Cd and Ni, it was below 0.05 mmol/g for the four reactive systems. Mixing granular zeolite, organoclay and model soil increased the chemisorption. Providing that GZ is reactive enough for the specific conditions, GZ can be mixed to obtain the required sorption. Granular clinoptilolite addition to soil is recommended for PRBs for metal contaminated groundwater.

Cement-Bentonite (CB) barriers are expected to become a sustainable and reliable engineering solution. The deformation of CB is of interest to engineers to comprehend, particularly how CB responds to changes in loading during its construction and service life. The purpose of this study was to examine how samples of CB mixtures behaved during consolidation. This study investigated: (1) the influence of curing time and constituent materials on the consolidation properties of CB samples, (2) the volumetric change and the rate of volumetric change in response to a specific loading condition via consolidation tests. For this purpose, a laboratory consolidation test with a load range of 50 to 3200 kPa was carried out in accordance with BS 1377-7:1990 using the oedometer apparatus. This study discovered that the consolidation characteristics of CB samples are similar to those of overconsolidated soil. The CB sample became more resistant to consolidation under varying loads as curing progressed. The presence of more bentonite resulted in an increase in the recompression index. The inclusion of GGBS contributed to the consolidation characteristics of CB through the following mechanisms: (1) the significant decrease of the degree of consolidation with a curing period longer than 28 days, despite the slow strength development of the early-age curing; (2) the increase of the preconsolidation pressure; and the addition of GGBS was found to be more effective than the addition of more bentonite in increasing the preconsolidation pressure. The treatment and disposal of wastewater still is a big problem of Antalya. The wastewater produced in the residential areas is biologically treated, the produced sludge, however, remains untreated. At the moment more than 60 t/day of dewatered sludge are buried at a landfill area located directly above the main groundwater resources of the city. As the area does not have any drainage and liner systems, it is believed that this kind of disposal constitutes a threat to the groundwater resources. Therefore, Antalya Metropolitan Municipality decided to add anaerobic sludge digestion units to the wastewater treatment plant. The sludge digestion tanks are considered to be built within the wastewater treatment plant area which is less than 1 km away from the beaches along the Mediterranean Sea. The purpose of this study is to examine the foundation soil in terms of its bearing capacity, consolidation settlement, and earthquake risks and to find out whether this construction site is suitable for building the sludge digestion tanks or not.
