Response to Association of Prolonged QTc Interval With Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy: A Neurocardiac Syndrome Inside the Mystery of the Insula of Reil

Abstract

We would like to thank John Madias, MD for his interest in our review about the mystery of the pathogenesis of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC). 1 We agree with his semantic restraint of the eponym Wellens electrocardiographic pattern, which needs a contextual disambiguation.As stressed by Dr. Madias in a previous letter to the editor, this term is often used incorrectly in the literature. There is a neuronal component in the heart, which has been neglected for a long time, whereas specific attention has been focused almost exclusively on cardiac muscle and vessels. It would not be an overstatement to say that multidisciplinary research involving neurologists and cardiologists in investigating this little brain in the heart will revolutionize care in many areas of cardiovascular disease.
