Response of Various Weed Species and Corn (Zea mays) to RPA 201772

Abstract: Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to determine the response of corn (Zea mays), barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli), common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album), large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti), and yellow foxtail (Setaria lutescence) to RPA 201772. Barnyardgrass, large crabgrass, velvetleaf, and common lambsquarters were more susceptible than yellow foxtail to RPA 201772. Velvetleaf was the most susceptible species and rates above 18 g ai/ha of RPA 2017… Show more

“…Isoxaflutole and mesotrione are used in crops for broad spectrum weed control, including several broadleaf weeds, both PRE and POST (Armel et al Mitchell et al 2001). Researchers using these herbicides have reported control of carpetweed (Anonymous 2004a), common lambsquarters (Anonymous 2002(Anonymous , 2004aBhowmik et al 1999), dandelion (Anonymous 2002(Anonymous , 2004aMitchell et al 2001), and hairy galinsoga (Anonymous 2002(Anonymous , 2004a (Table 2).…”

“…Isoxaflutole (Anonymous 2002;Bhowmik et al 1999) and mesotrione (Anonymous 2004a;Armel et al 2003) are currently marketed for broad spectrum weed control in field corn (Zea mays L.). Tolerance of grass crops suggests that isoxaflutole and mesotrione may be useful for selective grass weed control in coolseason turfgrass.…”

“…Under field conditions, the phytotoxicity after irrigation was seen in both experimental years. Bleaching symptoms on maize leaves as in the studies of Bhowmik et al (1999) was recorded in early growth of the maize. The yellow coloration remains on leaf borders, and the oldest leaves had a reduction in growth.…”

“…Greenhouse and field experiments to determine the response of maize and weeds to herbicide RPA 201772 (IFT code before registration) were conducted by Bhowmik et al (1999). The weeds were controlled depending on dose -velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti) was the most susceptible, followed by common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album), large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli), and yellow foxtail (Setaria glauca).…”

“…(large crabgrass) is a common summer annual weed that grows in both temperate and tropical regions (Holm et al, 1977) and is a serious problem in many row crops (Mohler and Callaway, 1995;Monks and Schultheis, 1998;Bhowmik et al, 1999;Sarker et al, 2002;Aguyoh and Masiunas, 2003;Fu and Ashley, 2006) and in turf grasses (Walker et al, 1998;Richmond et al, 2003). In Argentina, this weed is considered research paper…”
